Hawk Mountain
A speculative branding proposal for Hawk Mountain Sanctuary, a wild bird sanctuary located along the Appalachian flyway in eastern Pennsylvania.
Hawk Mountain Sanctuary’s mission is to conserve birds of prey worldwide by providing leadership in raptor conservation science and education, and by maintaining Hawk Mountain Sanctuary as a model observation, research and education facility.
The selected non-profit organization needed a fresh identity and a reimagined visual presence to better communicate its mission and values to its audience. The goal was to revitalize the organization's brand identity, including its logo, colors, typography, and overall visual elements to create a cohesive and memorable representation.
My goal with the reimagined Hawk Mountain was to amplify the sanctuary’s contribution and action within the scientific and educational community, without losing the inviting and safe atmosphere that surrounds their brand. There was also an important aspect that I wanted to highlight in the exploration— that Hawk Mountain is a sanctuary for more than just wild raptors. It’s also a major throughway along the Appalachian trail, seeing hikers travel safely through their grounds by the hundreds daily. The sanctuary is also a haven for other threatened wildlife and flora, and works diligently to protect these species as well.
We’re not just appreciating, we’re studying and understanding. Just one point in the Apalachian flyway, we play a critical role in the observation and study of the natural behaviors and migrations of wild raptors. All year round we’re tracking, recording, and contributing to the better understanding of wild raptors and other native species of wildlife that inhabit the sanctuary.
We aren’t just contributors to the scientific study of raptors, we’re also communicators to the public. We’re constantly interacting with our community to develop a growing understanding and appreciation of the work we do, and the nature we guard.
